Another kitchen designer company is setting sight on India. We came across this advertisement on the first page of Hindu newspaper today morning. (Chennai edition).

About Alno:

[source]

In 1927 the companies founder, Albert Nothdurft, opened up a small carpentry workshop in the town of Wangen bei Göppingen, thus effectively laying down the foundations for ALNO. The positive development of this workshop, and the fine quality of the hand-made work it supplied, led to the relocation of its production facilities to Pfullendorf in 1957, and in 1958 the carpentry workshop developed into ALNO Möbelwerke GmbH + Co. KG (”ALNO Furniture Production Ltd).”

Mirroring the rapid economic growth undergone of Germany and Europe, ALNO Möbelwerke GmbH + Co. KG developed by leaps and bounds, so that in 1995 the companies was converted into a joint stock company with shares being traded on the Stock Exchanges in Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

In August 2003, ALNO AG was merged with the Casawell Service Group, a network of companies active across the world in the fields of fitted kitchens and DIY-kitchens and in kitchen technology. With a turnover of 615,5 Mio. EUR during the business year 2006, plus around 2,400 employees, ALNO AG is among the largest manufacturers of kitchens in the world.

In addition to the factories in the companies traditional home town of Pfullendorf, where fitted kitchens are manufactured under the ALNO brand name, ALNO AG has at its disposal various other subsidiary German production companies that manufacture kitchens for specialized market segments: pino Küchen GmbH in Coswig-Klieken, Impuls Küchen GmbH in Brilon and Gustav Wellmann GmbH + Co.KG in Enger.

Elsewhere in Europe, ALNO has eight wholly-owned marketing subsidiary companies. In addition, ALNO also works together with first-rate importers on all the remaining continents, and in most cases has been doing so for many years - in short, ALNO kitchens from ALNO are available around the world.

Kitchen Timers - Another handy piece of equipment for your kitchen

Way back in February, we had written an article:

Using Kitchen Scales - Tip for Indian homemakers

Today’s article is actually an inspiration by seeing the egg like device on our shelf (see picture below).

EggTimer

The device which you see above resembles and egg. But it is actually a mechanical timer which is capable of counting back from 60 minutes down to 1 minute. At the end of this countdown, it would buzz like a typical mechanical alarm clock.

How it operates is simple - you take the device and twist it clockwise (wind it up). Care should be taken not to over-wind the device as it may get spoilt completely. After winding it up, you merely turn the dial anti-clockwise till the red market coincides with the time you want to set.

For example if you want a timer for 5 minutes, you can turn the egg’s top half anti-clockwise till the red market coincides with “5″. Its that simple. Once that is done, leave the device on the table and at the end of 5 minutes the thing will ring.

The uses for such a timer in the kitchen are many. You can time cooking, soaking, baking and virtually anything which needs some timing. Most recipes require you to do time based activities and this is the perfect solution for that. Before the advent of electronic timers on microwave ovens these devices were more popular with conventional ovens.

They are available in wide variety of shapes and colors!

As for the availability, we are not sure where in your city these would be available. Our piece was purchased in Germany. If you already have on, please do let us know where you purchased this.

Prestige Electric Rice Cooker - It Finally worked!

June 14th, 2008

Do you remember our tussle with the brand new electric cooker?  Well turns out that it actually did work. The only issue was that we didn’t know what to do with the piece of equipment shown below. It is called the Trivet and when we purchased the cooker, it was found below the main vessel. We kept it there in our first attempt and never realized that it was a mistake. Our neighbours who have a Panasonic electric cooker told us that this trivet has to be placed inside the main vessel.

We did that and then the cooker worked pretty well.

The cooking time was around 30 minutes. The rice was well made. We used 1:2 proportion for rice and water. We didn’t try the keep warm feature though. Remember to pre-soak the rice as it really has a good effect on the end product.
