3 Way Switch - Control appliances with ease

Some of us are familiar with 3 way switches. It is also known as a 2 way switch. Technically most wiring diagrams do refer to it as a 3 way switch. Anyway names aside, the most important task for this electrical accessory is that it let you operate any appliance from more than one switch.

3 Way Switch

The most common application for this is found in bedrooms, where lights, ceiling fans and the like are preferred to be controlled by two switches. One which is near the doorway and the other is usually placed near to the bed.

The 3 way switch offers convenience to home users and adds an element of safety too. Imagine that during emergencies, you could turn the lights on from your bed and avoid walking in the dark where chances are that you would stumble on something.

People even go in for fan regulators near the bed as it avoids the need of one having to get up and change the speed settings.

A simple wiring diagram is given below for your understanding.

So, if you are in the process of purchasing a new home, make sure that you have this neat device installed in key areas. Other useful applications include, stairway lighting, outdoor lights which can be controlled both from inside the home and the outside. Use your imagination and you could end up having a slightly more comfortable home.

Comments, questions are welcome.

Immersion Rod Water Heater - Cheap and quick alternative

December 27th, 2007

Though India has a tropical setting, owing to its huge geography, most parts of the country have quite a cold climate for months. This brings us to the inevitable chore of heating water for taking bath. Most common ways for heating water for Indian homes are:

  • Heating the water on the stove
  • Using an Immersion water heater
  • Installing a Geyser
  • Using green solutions like Solar water heaters

Our focus for this article is “Immersion water heater”.

Immersion Water Heater

An immersion water heater is a very simple appliance which heats a bucket of water in 10 to 15 minutes. It consists of a heating coil and has a chord similar to an electric iron.

To use an immersion heater, one simply fills a bucket of water and places the immersion rod into the bucket either directly or with an aid like a clothes hanger. Then they connect the plug into the socket and switch it on. Some models come with an indicator to show that they are working well.

Some points to be noted about immersion heaters:

  • Unlike expensive geysers, they do not have an auto off system. This means, when the bucket is warm enough for one’s liking, the system has to be manually switched off.
  • Just like geysers, operating immersion heaters without adequate water or no water will burn the coil and render the device useless.
  • Ensure that you buy a good brand and quality product to avoid electric shock and other discomfort for you and your family.

Apart from this, immersion heater is not a complete solution for water heating. The biggest drawback is that one can only use the heated water from the bucket with a mug or external aid. This means having a hot shower is ruled out. Further there are chances of water spillage or people getting scalded as they try to transport this bucket of hot water from the place with electric connection to the place where they intend to use it. It is also quite common to get mild electric shocks from this apparatus, especially from those of poorer quality. So we advise prudent and cautious use.

The other environment topics which we covered so far were:

Water conservation at home

Today’s Hindu newspaper has a huge government advertisement on CFL Technology and requests people to “Switch on  to Save”.

CFL-1

This advertisement echoes all our thoughts and suggestions and we thought of elaborating on the details in case you miss the same on the paper.

 CFL-2

The image above (please click to enlarge) conveys many details:

CFL Advantages:

  • Four times more efficient
  • Lasts upto 10 times longer than incandescents
  • Uses 50-80% less energy than incandescents
  • Uses 1/3 the electricity and lasts up to 10 times as long as incandescents
  • Single 18 watt CFL in place of a 75 watt incandescent saves about 570KWH over its lifetime
  • Replacing single incandescent bulb with CFLs keep out half-tonne of CO2 out of the atmosphere
  • Saving electricity reduces CO2 emissions, sulfur oxide and high level nuclear waste
  • New CFLs give a warm inviting light instead of the “cool white”light of older fluorescent
  • They use rare earth phosphors for excellent color and warmth
  • New electronic ballasted CFLs do not flicker or hum
  • CFL can be applied nearly anywhere where incandescents are used

The advertisement says
