Wet Grinders are an indispensable part of south Indian kitchens. To make delicious “dosas”, or steaming hot “idlies”, the primary requirement is the batter. Wet Grinders are labelled so as they grind water, dal and rice and produce the batter used for preparing south Indian delicacies.

Few decades ago, electric grinders were still unheard of. People used stone grinders where manual work was involved to prepare the batter. A sample pic is shown below. Click on the image to enlarge.

But times have now changed. People realized that simple mixer grinders were not powerful enough to handle rice, dal combination. Companies saw an opportunity here and the modern wet grinder was born. Every year new innovations and patents are happening in this field. The product that is being reviewed here is “Ultra Grinder” from ELGI industries. The picture is shown below. Review

Reviewed by Ms. Prabha from Chennai.

I purchased this grinder in 2007 from S.S. Annamalai stores in Thiruvanmiyur Chennai. At the time of purchase I think we paid around 6900 rupees for this model. Today it may be cheaper than that amount.

Along with the grinder we also purchased a stand for the unit which cost us an additional 1500 550 rupees. The stand ensured that we do not have to place the grinder in difficult to reach places. The bonus of the stand was that it had wheels and makes it easy to push around the grinder.

The stand also gives a good grip to the grinder even while in operation. The unit’s grinding capabilities are good. Cleaning the grinder after usage is fairly easy. The plastics on the unit could have a better quality and finish to it.

One disadvantage that I notice while using the Grinder is that at the time of opening the lid, the purple plastic part falls off. The manufacturers could have implemented a mechanism to hold it in place.

The motor in the unit is silent and smooth in operation. It handles the load well without getting stuck like conventional wet/tilting grinders. The unit heats up a bit but then again this is common in many grinders.

We did not purchase any accessories like Atta dough maker or coconut scrapper simply because it wasn’t available at the time of purchase.

Overall maintenance is easy and the grinding stones can be removed for cleaning. The container where the dough/batter is ground also serves as the storage unit. After the grinding job is completed, the entire container can be kept in the refrigerator for storage.

Update : The stand is NOT manufactured by ELGI.

Price of a 2 litre model as on 20 Feb 2008 from SS Annamalai is rupees 5700 after discount.

Review :

” I purchased this product from S.S. Annamalai stores in Thiruvanmiyur Chennai approximately 5 years back. At that time it cost me around 3000 rupees but today it should cost between 4000 to 5000 rupees.

The unit is compact in construction and offers good overall performance. The motor is of real good quality and has not given us any problems whatsoever. The operating knobs/switches are still intact and have not come off or feel loosened up. The unit operates with optimum noise. The key to reducing sound is that we should grind the right stuff and not overload the mixer.

It has 3 jars and the unit can store/dock 2 at a time. This is convenient in my opinion. There are no blades to change and no accessories to loose. 3 jars offer different purposes and keep the task simple and practical. The lid closes properly and doesn’t allow spillage of the item which is being ground. Again overloading can result in overflow. The rubber gaskets are of good quality and I have not changed them even once since I bought it.

I use the grinder for various purpose about 5 times a week. A lot of my review would reflect this amount of usage. At the rear of the unit, there is a nice wire management system by which you can wrap the power chord when not in use.

The unit is kind of pearl or off-white and has not faded over the years. The placement on table is rigid and the foot of the unit is well designed to operate without much vibration. The jars are easy to wash and the unit is easy to maintain.

Blades are of good quality. I really cannot think of any disadvantage for this unit except maybe the price. Overall the unit offers excellent value for money.”

Philips DVD Players - DVP 3166 & DVP 5490 | User comment & Review

Thanks to Pradeep for this comment posted in our earlier article “Philips DVD Players - DVP 3126,5986,3146,3166,5150 | Prices - India” on Jan 15 2008.

DVP3166

Over to Pradeep:

When I was in Kerala during the last week of December 2007, i decided to purchase a DVD player for my parents. We already have a Sony TV there and no other Hi-Fi component Deck / Music systems or home theater setup.

I was sampling the market there (Ernakulam / Kottayam). Please note that I did not go into any fancy showrooms. Just plain multi-brand dealers, ‘cos they seem to have better[more affordable :-) ] pricing !!

The most commonly displayed DVD players were from LG/Samsung/Philips/Sony among others.

I am not a fan of LG or Samsung. And was specifically looking for Sony or otherwise Philips. The DVD player that I was looking for need not have HDMI or in-built Amplifier, but i did want DivX Certified and an USB port.

Having a USB port is so useful. Just pop-in any USB storage device (mp3 players, flash drives, etc.) and you can browse through the folders to view photos, play mp3s and other audio(if supported) and mainly play Hi quality DivX-encoded content.

Sony does have a model (the model number escapes me now!), but is apparently not yet available in India.

Then I had to switch to a Philips make. There are 2 models here which provide USB (3166 and 5490). The 5490 also has HDMI and Ultra-DivX (Menus,Extra, etc.) and was available for INR 4,290. Since the DVD player was meant only for my parents and to use it along with the Sony TV(no HDMI), I decided to go in with the 3166 model. The price mentioned on the box is INR 4,490, the dealer (QRS -Kottayam) was giving it at INR 3,300. that seemed to be a reasonable price and so purchased it.

I then immediately tested it with all sorts of formats, and so far it has played everything I threw at it.

After coming back to Chennai, i was discussing this with my colleague and he informed me that he enquired on the same model, few weeks before me in either Viveks or S.S. Annamalai Enterprises (in Chennai), and they were selling it for around INR 2.800 !!!
