With the advent of digital cameras, no one these days actually buys the good old film based cameras. Even professionals who had these SLR cameras are switching over to Digital SLR cameras. With so much of exodus going on in the camera industry, wouldn’t you expect the same in the photo frames market too? Well, guess what? Digital photo frames are here.

Digital photo frames are wonderful devices. They have a color LCD screen inside, similar to the ones found in laptops. They also have an inbuilt memory where you can load images and advanced models have memory card slots where you could put in the card directly from your camera into the frame.

You can choose the rate at which the picture changes and also play with various other settings. Really advanced models sync with your computer via a wireless network and display all the latest images.

Digital Photo Frames are real fun especially when you want to show a lot of photos to visitors. A few models have a remote control where you can watch slide shows of the pictures.

Prices start from around 5,000 rupees for the smallest size (6 inches approximately). These are just approximations. For accurate prices please check your local stores.

Many brands deal with Digital Photo Frames. Popular ones include Philips, Kodak - to name a few.

Using Coasters at home

For most of us a beverage is part of our daily life. It could be a fruit juice, cup of coffee or butter milk. We use all sorts of containers to drink them - Glass, steel mugs, porcelain and so on. What is common to all the beverages and the containers? They tend to stain the surface where it is placed.

Cold drinks gather precipitation on the outside. These slowly trickle down form beads of liquid and finally fall onto the table or which ever surface the container is placed on.

Hot drinks do the reverse. They heat the surface and cause scarring or leave different sorts of stains on the surface. The end result is that our precious table surfaces made of wood or glass tend to accumulate grime which looks particularly disgusting from some angles and based on the lighting of the room.

Given the fact that water in most of our homes is hard and salty in nature (or has sugar - in case of soft drinks), you would see stains immediately on the surface and some of them can be hard to remove.

So what is the solution for this? It is very simple. Use - Coasters. Perhaps you havent heard of the name, but you have certainly used it in one form or the other. Coaster is a simple layer of either plastic or cloth or paper, which sits in between the glass and the table surface. All the spills and chills are protected by the coaster.

If the coaster is made of cloth (or rarely paper - disposable ones), it can not only protect the surface of the paper, but also be use to wipe out spillage.

Here is a sample image of coaster. You can choose your shape and colors to match the decor or your home.

Coasters can be made of :

  • Paper (disposable)
  • Glasss
  • Steel
  • Bamboo
  • Leaves! (disposable)

Defrost Timer from Whirlpool

Our washing machine from whirlpool had a standard service done under the AMC today. At the end of the service the service man introduced a product from whirlpool - A defrost timer.

So what is this device? We all know that defrosting a fridge involves shutting the compressor off for a period of an hour or so. (depends on the brand and the settings). The red button for defrost is a timed switch which turns the compressor off and back on at the end of the pre-defined timeout.

This is a good thing but requires manual intervention. Most of us forget to defrost the fridge and end up seeing layers of ice in our freezer. This is actually not good for the fridge. Ofcourse this is applicable only to Direct Cooling fridges and not the frost free ones.

So this device, sits in-between the mains and your fridge. Every 8 hours, it shuts the supply to the fridge off and turns it back on. It is not clear how long the fridge stays off though.

The features are given here from the website:

  • Pleasure of Frost Free in Dc
  • Power Saver
  • Auto defrost after every 8 hours
  • Hassle free installation
  • 1 year warranty

The price as mentioned on the website is Rs. 800/-

One thing strange here is that the technician mentioned it has a 6 month warranty whereas the website says it has one year warranty. Not sure who is correct!
