I’m stating this from my own experience and this is nothing to do with brand presented here… CFL bulbs are not suited for bathrooms or any rooms where you’d switching on/off the buld multiple times within a short span of time. If used in such rooms, the life of the bulb is cut short drastically. I would suggest it for Kitchens, Dining rooms, Living rooms etc.
Also, another awareness that is not there in India yet (and manufacturers/companies/Govts also turn a blind eye towards creating awareness) is about the safe disposal of such iteams. CFL bulbs contain minuscule amount of mercury which makes it necessary to safely dispose it. If not, accidental breakage might lead to mercury spillage which is next to impossible to spot and clean it. Particulary with kids around – beware. This is my 2 cents on this topic.

    Cheers,
    Ramesh

  2. very true Ramesh….especially the safe disposal points that you have raised in your comment.

And I wish companies who sell these products also mention it clearly on their product boxes – mercury content – safety precautions and the like….

they also seem to be taking consumer’s safety for granted.

CFLs may now cost only Rs 10-15

The government is working on a proposal that will provide consumers the energy saving CFL bulbs at the cost of a common incandescent bulb — Rs 10-15. It is working to ensure that the distribution of the subsidised CFL bulbs begins in right earnest across the country in the next six months, though some cities may see the introduction of these cheap CFLs even sooner.

The government estimates that once the replacement is complete, it could save the consumers energy cost of 10,000 MW annually and at the same time reduce the country’s carbon footprint. Taking advantage of the clean development mechanism under the international climate change treaty, the government will be able to offset the cost of the CFL bulbs to the manufacturers or the distributors by availing carbon credits. Carbon credits allow developing countries to take energy saving action, with the developed countries bearing the costs of such action.

The proposal received the green light from the Prime Minister at the climate change council meeting on Friday.
Under the plan, the CFL producers will tie-up with power distributors across the country to distribute the bulbs at Rs 10-15 to each domestic consumer on the grid. The bulbs will be quality certified to work for 10,000 hours with a guarantee from the distributor to replace the bulb in case of early failure. The bulb will be bought back at Rs 2 upon fusing and sent to mercury recovery facilities that will be set up by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency will accredit experts to monitor the usage of power through each power distributor’s domain. High-end meters will be put up in a few houses which will remotely send signals recording the power consumed by using a CFL instead of a common bulb. On this basis, the Bureau will be able to calculate the amount of carbon credits the CFL manufacturer and distributor will be able to claim. These credits can then be sold in carbon markets to recover the additional costs and profit.

The director-general of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ajay Mathur, told TOI, “Each year, the manufacturer or distributor will be able to recover Rs 20-25 on each bulb and therefore recover complete retail cost in three years time.”

it seems wht Ramesh told about the life of the CFL bulb is tru. My Philips CFL bulb lost life in just around 2 yrs from purchase, as we used it in bathroom and often used to switch it on and off. Some alternative is needed for this purpose.

Hope Halonix finds a durable and power efficient solution for this. I have changed almost all the lighting in my house to CFL 2 yrs back with different brands. This Philips seems to be 1st to die. But it has the reason to die, as we turn it on/off frequently.

guys! any suggestions for replacement? power efficient and durable! or Incandescent is the only solution?

Anybody knows, if there is somebody taking back CFLs for Safe disposal in and around Mumbai and maybe pays for returning CFLs like in Delhi. Read article in the link below:

    Hi,
As Ramesh mentioned that CFL is not fit for Washroom, it is true, because frequent On/Off will reduce the life to 10%. Solution is LED bulb and they are available for Rs.350/- onward life is more then 10 years and consumption only 3watt against CFL’s 16 watt( A 8 W cfl, actually consumes 16 W as power factor is mere 0.5)
