Space utilization/optimization in Indian homes | Architect Speak
February 5th, 2008
This article aims to solve a common problem which is faced by many people. In India, planning prior to moving in is not followed by many people. the result is that they have more than what can fit into a home. The second most prevalent issue is that with rising costs of real estate, the sizes of homes are shrinking. People are unable to purchase the home of their dreams and end up in a small 2 bedroom apartment. The net result of all this is that we run out of space in our homes.
We would like to thank Ms. Jane, an architect from Chennai who gave us the tips for this article.
a) Choose a lighter tone on the walls (at least in the max area of the wall)
This is an illusion effect which makes your home look larger than it is. The effects are apparent to visitors who come from time to time. With proper lighting tones, the interior of the home should be really nice and warm to live in.
b) Choose furniture (size) as per the floor area of the room available
If possible, try to dispose the old furniture that exists in your current home, those which you feel are too bulky to fit in your current environment, and pick new ones which would really fit into the plan of your new home. We know this is a tough choice as the costs involved in furnishing are also high. But given the one time investment in your home, you may want to save some money to do this. This by far would be the biggest space saving tip in this article. Choosing the right sofa sets, beds and tables really would make that difference and give your home that extra space you need.
c) Wall mounting the shelves, t.v, and other gadgets
With decreasing costs of flat screen televisions, wall mounting these would really save a lot of space. Do away with tradition TV stands where you would store your home theatre, DVD players and so on. Most of these items could be mounted on the wall and they are much more easy to maintain over a period of time if they are wall mounted. The biggest advantage of wall mounting is that you would have a great looking ambiance. Your guests would simply love your interior decors!
d) Column constructions
This is applicable especially to apartments. If you have columns projecting into the room, make intelligent use of these. Instead of letting them to occupy and waste useful space, turn them around. column projections could be converted into slim shelves with glass fixtures into the wall. Here you can use “D” brackets. If glass is not your choice, you could use wood with a depth of around 2″. Avoid bulky show cases constructed into the columns. Let it be subtle and practical.
e) Colour of the wood work
Choose the colour of the wood work i.e. the laminate color or the polish color as per the size of the room. This choice of color would give the artificial feeling of space to your home. The choice of wood colour can also be chosen such that they complement the wall colors.
f) Kitchen tips
In the kitchen the area below the right angle corner of the counter can be used more effectively by providing plain shelves, than the standard rotating corner unit. It gives you more storage space for storing big vessels. There should be good lighting in kitchen .
To summarize, do not over load your house with things. Retain the adequate and dispose of the rest.Have adequate lofts for storage if you have need of them.
