Kiwi Kleen Drain Cleaner – Godrej Sara Lee product
Washbasins and kitchen sinks which are used regularly tend to collect debris both organic and inorganic. This tends to collect in the exhaust pipe and blocks the regular flow of water. Further the organic debris tends to produce foul smell and also attract pests such as cockroaches. So how do we deal with this problem?
There is a product called “Kiwi Drainex”. You may have heard of this name. The old pack is shown below:

This product was marketed by “Sara Lee Household & Body Care” and is now part of the Godrej Sara Lee company – a joint venture between the Godrej Group and US-based Sara Lee Corp. After the brand take over, Godrej Sara Lee has renamed the product as “KIWI Kleen Drain Cleaner”. The new branded product is shown below:

Primarily the product is a drain declogger and apparently it is one of its kind in India. It offers the following advantages to the users:
- Clears blocked, clogged and choked drains effectively.
- Dissolves materials like hair, soap, oil and residual food particles.
- Fights cockroaches and germs.
- Has a pleasant fragrance too.
- Does not damage pipes, septic tank etc.

I have purchased your packet for Rs 14 and have two questions
1. What is the composition is it oxalic acid crystals ?
2. The instructions say it can be used for sinks, washbasins and bathtubs but not for toilets- why is this ???

We do not know what the composition is. Perhaps the product label tells you all about it.
It cannot be used for toilets because it would interfere with the natural decomposition process of human waste. Further it can damage the tubes(probably).

it should be available in leading department stores/supermarkets. Did you manage to buy it already? If so please tell us where you bought it.
why is it that it cannot be used in toilets? because, they use even harder pipes than wash basins and sinks!

As someone already pointed out, it’s because it would interfere with decomposition. It is for the same reason that you cannot pour soapy water down your toilet. If you are doing it, you should probably stop.

Cement blocks cannot be removed easily. But understand there is a machine (hardware) available as drain thru cleaner. Dont know availability in India.

A little confused with instructions for using Kiwi Kleen
Instructions for use advise leave solution in sink for 30minutes but the Caution section advises Do Not Leave To Work for longer than 10 minutes before flushing through with plenty of hot water.
IS IS 10 OR 30 MINUTES? If wrong perhaps could cause a problem.

Fantastic product. My sink was jammed with probably lot of food particles. I decided to give Kiwi Drainex a try. A full cup of KD worked like magic and the crap just flooded out smoothly.
There is no need to remove excessive water from the Drain either. I couldnt remove any due to too much of grime and dirt floating around. Just aim it correctly in the sink and rest for the next 30-40 mins.
You should get this product in any local shop.

Been suing it for years but I think I’ll make it in my lab! Ingredients are not mentioned in Kiwi Kleen bottle which is surprising. Typically solid drain cleaners contain granules of sodium hydroxide. Some contain aluminum filings in them which causes the heat and smoke someone referred to above. so nothing to worry. Just be careful not to touch or inhale. Even if you do, immediately wash with plenty of water. use gloves if you have.
