    Nice Price-Feature Guide!

    When I was in Kerala during the last week of December 2007, i decided to purchase a DVD player for my parents. We already have a Sony TV there and no other Hi-Fi component Deck / Music systems or home theater setup.

    I was sampling the market there (Ernakulam / Kottayam). Please note that I did not go into any fancy showrooms. Just plain multi-brand dealers, ‘cos they seem to have better[more affordable :-) ] pricing !!

    The most commonly displayed DVD players were from LG/Samsung/Philips/Sony among others.

    I am not a fan of LG or Samsung. And was specifically looking for Sony or otherwise Philips. The DVD player that I was looking for need not have HDMI or in-built Amplifier, but i did want DivX Certified and an USB port.

    Having a USB port is so useful. Just pop-in any USB storage device (mp3 players, flash drives, etc.) and you can browse through the folders to view photos, play mp3s and other audio(if supported) and mainly play Hi quality DivX-encoded content.

    Sony does have a model (the model number escapes me now!), but is apparently not yet available in India.

    Then I had to switch to a Philips make. There are 2 models here which provide USB (3166 and 5490). The 5490 also has HDMI and Ultra-DivX (Menus,Extra, etc.) and was available for INR 4,290. Since the DVD player was meant only for my parents and to use it along with the Sony TV(no HDMI), I decided to go in with the 3166 model. The price mentioned on the box is INR 4,490, the dealer (QRS -Kottayam) was giving it at INR 3,300. that seemed to be a reasonable price and so purchased it.

    I then immediately tested it with all sorts of formats, and so far it has played everything I threw at it.

    After coming back to Chennai, i was discussing this with my colleague and he informed me that he enquired on the same model, few weeks before me in either Viveks or S.S. Annamalai Enterprises (in Chennai), and they were selling it for around INR 2.800 !!!

    Anyways, just wanted to add my 2cents (and more!!)

    Hi!!!

    this is too much….i z caled up one of the TMc Center to buy 3166…n he told me the price is 3919/- can anybody tell me from where we can get the good deal?

  3. Vivek | February 1st, 2008 at 8:15 pm

    Hi Praneeta

    We would not know where you are from. Neither would be know about the TMC center which you have mentioned in your comment. Could you please introduce yourself ? Where are you from?

  4. Vivek | February 1st, 2008 at 8:18 pm

    @ Pradeep

    thanks to you for the wonderful feedback. Your comment is now an article !

  5. Praneeta | February 1st, 2008 at 8:19 pm

    am sorry about that!! yes, i am frm Hyd…and the TMC center is in Hydernagar…i wanted the philips DVD 3166 (cs the dealer told thats the only one model Available right now int market) to gift someone…n my friend told she bought a year back fr 3200/-..but am not sure wod’s going on..

  6. Vivek | February 1st, 2008 at 8:32 pm

    @ Praneeta

    That was a swift response. If you friend has purchased the same model for 3200 a year back, I am sure that the prices would have dropped by this time. So the TMC centre guy is not giving you a fair deal @ 3900 odd rupees.

    Since we do not have anyone from Hyderabad onboard team Aavaas yet, we are not sure if we can guide you to the right shop.

    The online price from Indiatimes website is 4200 rupees, but this is not an indicator to the actual retail price.

    According to Philips’ site the price of the DVD 3166/94 is Rs. 4500/-

    Not sure if DVD 3166 is the same as DVD 3166/94. You may ignore the sub 3000 rupee price if you feel like.

    Hope you found this bit useful.

  8. Bhavandeep | February 8th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

    The 3166 is available for 3100 and not lower than that anywhere in delhi….this is the third week since i’m inquiring about the price of 3166 and it has not gone down. So If you get a price of 3000 - 3200 INR …then buy it. The showroom owner told me this model will be discontinued after august 2008 and new models will be introduced so either wait or buy rightaway.

  9. Vivek | February 8th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

    @ bhavandeep

    @pradeep
    hello pradeep
    i m looking for a player which can play all bittorrent offered formets such as divx,avi etc.heard u hv 3166.plz tell me if its compatible with 5.1 channel home theater systems too.thanx :)

  14. Vivek | March 9th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    @ pradeep 3166 can play divx. It may play the open source codec called “xvid”.

    AVI is a file extension. It could be encoded by a variety of codecs like divx, xvid etc. It is not sure if 3166 can play all of those formats.

    Bittorrents offer many file formats including FLV, MOV and RMVB….this player cannot support these file formats.

    As far as the home theatre support is concerned, I am quite sure it would have a co-axial output for 5.1 sound. But I am not sure if it has individual outputs for each speaker. What home theatre equipment are you considering to use?

  15. BSRK | March 10th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

    Hi All,

    This is Shiva from Mumbai. what the Pradeep said is right.There is only DVD players which has USB and Dvix along with all features are Philips and mitashi.I preferred Philips over Mitashi bcoz of only brand name.though Mitashi cost was 2000 only. I purchased Philips DVD player 3166 in Vijay salesat 2990/-.Before going to purchase i enquired in TATA chroma and Reliance Digital Shopes also. in both the shopes the price was 3499/- where as in Vijay sales it was 2990/-. i hope we may get less than this price in unbranded shopes.

  16. Bhavandeep Singh | March 10th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

    Hi guys,

    Except for 3166 you also have a budget option in BIG BAZAAR. It is the passion DVD player just for Rs.1400/-

    I have it since 2 months and till now it has played everything that i have thrown at it. If you don’t wanna buy, at least check it out. Its a real eco choice for low budjet USB DIVx players

  17. Vivek | March 10th, 2008 at 9:13 pm

    Hello Shiva

    thank you for leaving a comment behind. Does your player have support for home theatre? Pradeep was asking about the same.

    Yes, it has discrete 5.1 Audio output.

    @Sam

    The 3146 does not have the USB option, but it has additional Analog and Digital audio outputs.

  23. Anonymous | March 18th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

    Thanks Pradeep,

    Actually I was bit confused as at the Vishal Mega Mart, Delhi, the salesman displayed a model which has usb port in front but as I asked him the model no. he showed me a box where it was mentioned 3146 and he asked Rs3150.00 for that. I am thinking u are right, there may have been some mistake at the Vishal.

    @vivek
    sonyDVP NS 50 P,Is this possible to upgrade this dvd player into something which can play DivX formets.i know its a stupid question but is this possible to replace if we fix or replace few components n force this old beauty to play our desired formets

  32. Pradeep | April 4th, 2008 at 9:36 am

    @vivek
    if u find this as the repetation of my last message plz blame the site not me–lolzz
    nyways my question is—though it sounds stupid,can we upgrade our old dvd players by either replacing or fixing few components into something which can play Divx formets.I have SonyDVP NS50P

  33. Vivek | April 4th, 2008 at 9:54 am

    @ Pradeep

    playback of MPEG4 (DivX or XVID) is mostly a hardware feature. Usually the chip which decodes the bit stream needs to be capable of handling divx format.

    So in all probability, your old player cannot be tweaked to play divx.

    however some players, especially high end ones come with USB ports with which you can plug it to the PC and upgrade the internal firmware. This MAY give you Divx playback functionality.

    But for all practical purposes, I would say the answer to your question is NO.

    @ harsh

  39. Sujoy | May 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm

    Hi, I am from Bangalore. I was looking out for a DVD player which has both USB and can play Divx and decided to settle for Philips DVP3166 as my friend has one. However, at the shop they mentioned that it is being phased out now and is being replaced by DVP3258. The prices are as follows
    E Zone : DVP3166 - Rs3100/-, DVP3258 - Rs3670/-
    Adhiswar - DVP3166 - Rs3500/- + 3 DVD free
    Griha Vaibhav - DVP3258 - Rs3400/-
    Philips Gallery - DVP3100 - Rs3500/- DVP3258 - Rs3800/-
    I found Griha Vaibhav giving the best offer.
    The difference of DVP3258 to DVP3166 is that this new model has High Speed USB, the remote has a eject button , you can create MP3 from music CDs and is total black in colour.
