Mukesh Ambani’s new house - Antilla

Thought it will be interesting to cover the house being constructed in Mumbai’s Altamount Road by the world’s richest man – Mukesh Ambani. Yep, he’s officially the richest now with the skyrocketing share prices of RIL.Mukesh Ambani residence

The house (called Antilla) is being valued at Rupees 4000 crores and will be 173 metres tall. Normally that is the equivalent of a 60 storeyed tower, but in this case each floor is more than twice the height of a normal floor, with the result that the building will only have 27 floors when completed. Given the prevailing state of skyscrapers in Mumbai, this building will be more than twice as tall as the earlier tallest buiilding. The view from the top will be breathtaking, no doubt.

Some other absurd facts about this ‘house’..

  1. 3 helipads on top. Mumbai corporation has not given permission for making this operational yet.
  2. Hanging gardens within the structure
  3. Swimming pool within the structure
  4. A two storey Health centre
  5. Parking space for 168 cars (6 floors). I initially thought that meant there will be a mini office in the building but apparently that is not the case. All these cars will belong to Mukesh Ambani! Just in case you are interested, he drives a 5 crore Maybach now.
  6. A floor exclusively for servicing these automobiles within the building.
  7. A floor for Home theatre – sitting capacity of 50

Most absurd of all, the house will have a staff of 600 (sic) to do the maintenance activities. That gives a ratio of 1:100 for people living in the house and those who are paid to take care of it. The six lucky (?) ones are the man himself, his wife, his 3 children and his mother Kokilaben. The family will be moving in from their old home ‘Sea Wind’ which was a 14 floor building at Cuffe Parade.

In fairness, Mukesh bought the property in 2002. So he has not spent anywhere close to the $1 billion people are now valuing the property at. And it is not just him, plenty of other rich tycoons have indulged in their residences. Two people who immediately come to mind are Mittal & Gates.

UK-based steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal (he is still an Indian citizen though) bought the most expensive house in London last year, paying £60m for a place in Kensington Palace Gardens.Microsoft founder Bill Gates had his house built as technology showpiece several years back. The house is reputed to have cost upwards of $100 million. I will write about this particular property sometime in the future. It is much more interesting than the Ambani house, because Gates tried to implement many new, yet to be proven technologies in his blueprint.

Isn’t that ridiculous..agreed, he is the richest man in the world, but this is sheer waste of riches !
Off course thats not what Mukesh Ambani thinks :)

  2. Karthik | November 5th, 2007 at 9:50 am

I am sorry, but i don’t think Mukesh Ambani is he richest man in the world yet. I think the position is still held by Carlos Slim followed by Gates and then Mukesh. Though Irrelevant to the post, i thought Id correct what i think is a mistake. Reliance itself says that people claiming mukesh as richest miscalculated the riches!!

  3. Williams | November 5th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

    Thanks Karthik

You are correct. Apparently there is a personal denial from Mukesh as well. Giving the link here
    http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/article3127336.ece
Note that he claims his wealth is only 25 billion pounds. It needs to be only 30 billion pounds to overtake Gates. Bound to happen in the next few months, the way Sensex is behaving…

  4. Williams | November 5th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

    Karthik..
    You are correct. Thanks.
    http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/article3127336.ece
Mukesh has issues a personal denial saying that he is not worth so much. Apparently he says his wealth is at 25 billion pounds and he needs 30 billion pounds to overtake Gates. That is bound to happen sooner or later with the India story kicking in for good - Rupee appreciation, stock market valuations, growth in the business, etc are all strong.
But let’s not forget. Premji had also made it to the top 5 richest people in the world a while back, but could not maintain the ranking as the stock prices of Wipro fell afterwards…

  5. Karthik | November 5th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

It would be amazing to find out the details of the construction materials used, the choice of decor,…etc. Meanwhile what’s Anil upto ??

  6. Sudarsan | November 6th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

Though this building does not have a visual appeal for $1 billion spent, its unique architecture will make people look at it…..I personally think Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Shah Jahan and Kings of Rajasthan have spent their money better.

  7. Williams | November 7th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

    Sudarsan,
Agree with you on the building’s visibility. However, I am not sure that in this case it is such a good thing. So many eyeballs looking up at the house cannot really be good for the residents. This is the natural extreme of the local superstition that one should not build a house right infront of a road (different from building on the road side) as it is bad luck (too many people stare at the house, you see :) ). Earlier I thought the custom was ridiculous, but now I think I understand why it arose in the first place. Extremes have a way of clarifying things…
All the best wishes to the family though. Hope they build a wonderful home..

    Karthik,
Decor etc. is not yet known as the building itself will take several more months for completion. Am sure Anil will have something up his sleeve as well after this. Let’s wait & watch :)

  8. Williams | November 7th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

To add to the above comment, I don’t think Mukesh has spent anywhere close to $1 billion. He has incurred only the construction cost and besides, he bought the property in 2002 when the real estate prices were much lower.

$1 billion is the value the house will have in the market if it were to be sold now (imagining it is already finished). That’s another interesting thing, there is no one else in the world who can afford to buy the building…

    Thanks for the link Krisashok..

Reminds me of the quote frequently mis-attributed to Voltaire, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Substitute ‘do’ in place of ’say’ and that sums up your view, I take it. I find myself in agreement, but only for the most part. The lines one draw in this are ever so blurry that no view will find everyone’s consent, which leads me to another quote, genuine one this time from Voltaire. “To hold a pen is to be at war.”
    :)

  15. AHSAN TARIQ | November 30th, 2007 at 12:33 am

I wish Antilla help’s him to find out the point of contentment. Man can never ever be satisfied without this point.

  16. prasad | December 1st, 2007 at 2:27 pm

it’s sad what he did with that huge building it is better if he make some charity.

  17. Karthik | December 2nd, 2007 at 1:48 am

I disagree with Prasad. Not because I am pro-mukesh or anything. But I am anti-charity. Well not entirely but almost. Ill tell you why:

It is better to give employment to people than to give alms. That way you give them salary and they feel good about it because they have earned it. They feel dignified. When you give it away to charity or as alms, they feel “sad” ? ;)

How would you feel if someone always paid your bills in a restraunt. Maybe you will feel great for a week or two. Maybe a month at the most. After that you feel ashamed. Thats how charity works. Makes you feel dwarfed and small.

So I think Mukesh is doing more than his part for the people. He is providing them with employment opportunities. Even in this proposed house, he will be creating positions for which people will get paid. So Isn’t that good ? Thats how the economy is supposed to work!!

  18. DONALD TRIUMPHS | December 5th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    MUKESH IS NOTHING

  19. Karthik | December 8th, 2007 at 12:09 am

I am sure we were not talking about Mukesh himself Donald. But yes if we have to discuss that, inspite of the Indian rupee being 1/40th of the US Dollar, Mukesh is doing pretty well. Now imagine a change in scenario wherein the USD were to become 1/40th of INR. :P Interesting figures isn’t it ?

  20. Williams | December 9th, 2007 at 5:49 pm

Agree with you Karthik, on employment versus alms funda. Guess most people would agree with it. I would like to dive a bit deeper though, is any kind of employment better than no employment?

Let me be clearer, I don’t want to get into ethical/moral arguments associated with jobs dealing with grey legal areas. I am leaving that aside and looking only at the earning capacity of the individual being enhanced by the job he/she does. In my opinion, a job should be more than a livelihood, if it is to be meaningful it should provide a way for the individual to improve and progress in life. Employments that provide this opportunity is valuable. Employments that don’t provide such an opportunity is only a glorified alms collection.

    An extreme view? Perhaps..

I read all the comments and found all pessimistic. I fell we should not imprint our bathos and discontentment with this marvell. Look at it in other angle. Well the so call world’s richest man( I don,t know if it is declared authentically) is enjoying haing his imagination soaring in the sky. Who are we to comment. Let’s be possitive. If any of us having such a money wonnt we do such a marvellous thing if not the residence. We are calling Taj Mahal as the world’s wonder. People would have agashed at that time When Shajagan built it. So let’s accept one among us is capable of doing it. Praise him. Appreciate him.

He can create schools, home for the homeless, hospitals for the handicapped. India and its poor/destitute need that more than anything. oh well- time will tell the difference.

We should admire a successful person such as Mukesh. there are a lot many people who spend all their earnings and savings and build their home, leaving a huge debt, thinking that house is an asset. how can such people blame a succssful person? in proportion to his wealth, i do not think that he has done some thing bad, but a thing that we Indians can be proud of. it is sad to see that there are negative comments and complaints, and what i believe is exactly the reson for such people to be poor (mindset. love richness if you want to be the next yourslef. how can one be wealthy if he conditions his mind to be poor? wealthy people commit to be wealthy, not just wish to be wealthy. i appreciate comments from positive mided people such as Chandrashekaran and Vivek.

Atta boy!! Great house. This is a very sustainable property - less footprint - both landwise and carbon. I salute Mr Ambani for being the first in India to think of environment. This house is an example and sets a precedence for the rest of rich Indians. I read sheer wastage - Wastage of what? He has earned it and it is his prerogative to choose the way to spend it. And he did it…..

    Congrats!!!

Indians should not be proud, in fact regret for having 4 Indians at the top ten 10 list of richest men in the World. World bank classifies India as a low income economy - with a per capita income of only $4,500 (US has $46,000). This shows the extreme disparity in incomes of Indians.. stop using Reliance products!

please go and check how much Money dose USA owe to the out side world … dont talk about India or Indians if you dont know any thing about it .. you Amaricans dont even know how many states your country has .. and if you ask an amarican to pit out australia he will show shairlanka…

  50. Rushi | May 7th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

    @Nelly
are you saying there are no poor people in US and no ever sleeps hungry. I have lived in US and the cities are no different to Mumbai. You have your share of homeless, poor and desperate people and hordes of millionaires and billionaires. And don’t even compare the per capita; 4500 $ is approx 200,000 Rs. which is enough to feed your self and your family in India.
Cry babies always cry, whatever they see or do.
    Shut the f**k up.

    @Vijay,

Do check the date of comments. They hold the key to everything. :)

    @Nelly,

Atleast we don’t have drug barrons. :) We have respectable people who make money with their business acumen and hard work.

@Everyone who thinks Mukesh should donate the money,

Yea, right. Get a life people. Why should he donate money ? He pays tax to the Government just as you and I do. If anyone is to blame for the sorry/sordid state of affairs in India. It’s the Indian Givernment who are a bunch of nincompoos who don’t know how to invest money, how to handle money.

On top of all that, Mukesh is the richest because he has declared all his property, which means he is paying tax.

There are definitely many (politicians) who don’t declare their property. These are the guys who are looting our country. I am sure they must have more assets than Mukesh. Just that they don’t declare it.

So, for the final time, stop this Mukesh his wasting his money crap. To the guys who can’t, go to Singapore. They will give you one room for your family to stay in.

  92. Mohan | June 24th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Mukesh Ambani is not Shahjehan nor is he building a Taj Mahal, if the photo of the house is anything to go by. It is tall, ugly and contorted. Seems Mumbai will soon have the reputation of having the ugliest house on the Globe, thanks to Mukesh and his wife’s ill-conceived design. What a waste of a golden opportunity to showcase Indian Architecture

  93. indian | June 25th, 2008 at 10:36 am

Great architectural design by Perkins Will. They’ve kept in mind the ecological effect it may have and have created an environmentally friendly mansion.

  97. hiro bachani | June 29th, 2008 at 3:08 am

dear mr. mukesh ambani- as you know bill gates has a house worth only 100 million dollars- so it seems even you can be happy in a house worth 100 million dollars in mumbai- the rest of the amount —2.0 billion dollars minus 100 million dollars = 1.9 billion dollars — this amount you can safely give in a trust to a grameen type of bank in india - and with the micro-credit possible from this amount , you can help over 10 million poor destitute families- you will get the blessings of billions of people- by giving in charity- there is no need to get the curses of millions of people- please think carefully before spending unnecessarily- regards-
