Managing footwear – A Perennial problem

I am quite sure that most of you face this problem at home. How to effectively manage footwear at home?

Lets do a quick math here. Assume that a home has 4 occupants, Dad, Mom , Daughter and a Son.

Dad needs – 1 formal pair of shoes, 1 Semi casual pair of shoes, 1 set of sport shoes , 1 Formal pair of slippers /Sandals and 1 all purpose slipper for regular indoor/outdoor use.

5 pairs for dad.

Mom needs (lets say) – 3 pairs of slippers , 1 set of sneakers for walking and 1 all purpose slipper for regular indoor/outdoor use.

5 pairs for mom.

Daughter needs - 1 sports shoe for school , 1 regular shoe for school , 1 pair of slippers + 1 all purpose slipper for regular indoor/outdoor use.

4 pairs for daughter.

Son needs the same as the daughter.

4 pairs for son.

We are talking roughly 18 pair of shoes for the given family. And what do we do to store these footwear?

We use stands like the one shown above. This really not a good solution. It gathers dust. Your footwear can be stolen or misplaced. Leather goods can absorb moisture from the air in humid conditions and deteriorate over a period of time.

So have you managed your footwear in a different manner than described above? If so, please share it with us.

In apartments especially managing footwear can be tough as one has to consider keeping them right outside their homes which can remove the aesthetic appeal. Or they have to resort to storing the shoe rack in the balcony or some other vacant place.

Do share your opinions.

have a nice weekend.

This problem usually becomes worse than it should be, when people don’t dispose of their older footwear. We have also used stands like the one shown in the picture and invariably some of the items on the stand were just gathering dust due to lack of use.
I sometimes ended up putting my latest shoes (read wearable ones) under my bed or in another room etc.

Don’t know a solution for this though. Maybe we could have a dedicated shoe closet. Have seen this in some Western movies; especially with ladies whose shoes run into dozens…

  2. Shoe organizers are gaining popularity. These are usually a long strip of pouches that can be hung behind a door.

The following are my personal observations,
    a. Ladies and school children need a variety of foot-wear
    b. Old ones do not get thrown out readily, gets accummulated on the pretext of “saving for a rainy day”
    c. Many tend to leave their casuals on the floor, than on the shoe-rack.

If this is reflective of reality at your place my suggestions are,
–> Build a shoe-rack, with the top-rack dedicated for dry-umbrellas, shoe polish, brush etc, and reserve a rack for every member of the family. Keep tiny air-holes to keep the shoes airy. May sure it comes with a lock & key, as well as magnets. That way you can close it for regular use, and lock it while you are on holidays.
–> Keep small set for casuals, especially if people find it convenient to leave them on the floor, preferably a slightly raised platform with a drip-tray. That way even wet foot-wear & umbrellas can find a comfortable place to relax, on rainy days.

thank you for sharing the shoe organizer. it is an interesting concept. I wonder if it is available in India. The only thing which is wrong about it in my opinion is that, slightly muddy or dirty footwear may not be stored in those compartments without messing it up.

  11. I did some research on shoes that would help with my foot sprain. Six months ago, I sprained my right foot, and was off my feet for about three weeks

  12. I do enjoy the way you have presented this specific difficulty plus it does indeed supply me a lot of fodder for consideration. On the other hand, from what precisely I have seen, I just wish when the actual remarks stack on that men and women remain on point and don’t start upon a tirade regarding some other news of the day. Still, thank you for this exceptional point and whilst I do not really agree with this in totality, I respect the viewpoint.

  13. An adorable ladies, probably shavers that are created specifically for the purpose of taking walks or maybe sprinting. My partner and i could not have on Toms simply because usually tend to deplete simply, especially if you go walking about about defined at their side about throughout the working day. Process may possibly operate very, they aren’t will be washboard on the bottom and you should not sustain the archways so that may very well be distressing after a number of numerous hours.
