What you don’t like about your home?
August 20th, 2007
This is a weird experiment. We are trying to figure out, which factor in your home would you be most unhappy with. There is a rational in this question. You may ask what? If we can map user patterns we could infer something from it and perhaps target our posts in a better way. As mentioned in the start, its an experiment.
You could mention just the space which you are not happy with or some specific details about which you almost fume…It could be anything from color, to lack of ventilation to pest problems.
Hoping to see some of the common patterns emerge here.

Just to give a head start to comments, I thought I would post my dislikes here.
1) The bathroom. It really freaks me out.
2) The kitchen - really makes me not want to cook.
I could go on with reasons, but it would probably bias other comments.
Hey nice thread this one..
I could do with a new home altogether
But seriously, I feel my home is too cluttered with stuff. I like empty spaces and there is a lack of that in some rooms. Feel this might be the same with several other homes as well, especially those where people have been living for a long while.
Lighting is another pain area for me. Hate it when I have to read stuff squinting in the evenings.
The wardrobe and the book shelf…no matter how hard I try to get some order there, it always feel cluttered and I don’t like it when someone else arranges them for me either. I want to do the arranging myself but I don’t do it well enough
That’s about my home but on a general note, I hate houses with low ceilings. For some strange reason, they make me uncomfortable
We just constructed a new home, and we already took note of three issues.
1. Working with Marble - If someone wants to avoid the frustration of long construction time as well as surprises in the budget, its best to avoid Marble. I procured marble from Rajasthan, the price there is a steal. You pay exactly the same amount for transport/VAT/extras to get it to your door. It is only 10-20% cheaper than local market where you get to see & order conveniently. Thats not all, working with marble balluster & stairs, is an art and you will pay heavily that it works out 3x the cost of the raw material. Marble floors are not fix and forget during construction, they break, they have to be polished in sync with other jobs (painting, varnishing, wood-work). In summary I love marble on my new home, but had I known the above I could have saved time and big-bucks with Vitrified tiles upgraded to Italian marble look & feel.
2. Kitchen Platform - Traditionally Indian home-makers are used to 3 feet height for the kitchen platform, as they stock gas cylinders beneath the working platform. Since we have piped gas supply, I decided to keep the height to 2.5 feet as in Europe/US. What I did not realize was that for making Chapathis or Dishwashing, this 2.5 feet is felt to be low by home-makes ( I had atleast 3 ladies telling me that, even though I did not find any strain in doing a dumbcharade).
3. Our house was architected for a small plot. So if we have to have a covered car-park, there is no space on the same level for having Kitchen+Dining+Hall+Foyer+Bedroom+Toilet/Bath. So I did a small innovation by having the car-park at zero level, and raised the Foyer+Hall+Bedroom+Toilet/Bath at 4 feet level. We put the kitchen + Dining above the car-park (at 8 feet level). This way we could accomplish living space using split level planning. However the other bedrooms (Master, Children), multi-function room were shifted above. Climbing is a good exercise for now, but when old guests arrive or when we age, we think this can be a potential problem. Have to think of a domestic elevator (priced Rs.3lakhs onwards today), 10-15 years down the road.
