Indian Bathrooms

Traditionally in middle class family environments, bathroom is the most neglected and perhaps also riskly to use. Let me give you an example. Unlike western culture, Indian bathrooms have predominantly wet floors which has lead to many accidents. People have sustained head injuries, broken bones and trauma as a result of this.

While not every home can enjoy a separate WC and bathroom, the risk can be mitigated in a very pleasant way.  The best solution to these problems is using a dedicated shower cubicle.

You might say, most homes today dont even use a shower as either the water pressure is too low or maybe the water itself is hard/saline. But we deal with this at a later stage.

Shower cubicles are semi/fully closed glass enclosures which avoids water coming out onto the bathroom floor. There are many companies in India who are offering these kind of products today in the market. We will try and provide some listings in the coming days.

Some more pointers from our personal experiences are absence of storage cabinets in the bathroom. Some people store shampoo bottles and so on, on windows or flush cabinets. These attract dust, pests and also take away the aesthetic appeal from the bathroom. So while planning this space, make sure that you invest in small/medium cabinets for storing toilleteries.

Choosing a WC (western closet) can also be a daunting task. We will try and post some details on how to choose one. For Indians, we recommend a hygenie faucet apart from the regular toilet paper dispensers. This is yet another way to avoid water spillage onto the floors. Bidets are also becomming very popular in Indian homes, if you have the space for it.

In our experience, tap fittings, if invested in can give good results. Please try and do some homework on the tap fiitings, its quality and so on , before agreeing upon the final choice. Do not just give in to your builders ideas.

Some of the other things you may want to keep in mind while designing your bathrooms are

    1) Provision for a geyser (This requires to be taken care of even in plumbing as PVC pipes cannot be used for hot water.)

    2) A washbasin (with mirror. Trust me you dont want to be walking back and forth while shaving ;) )

    3) A bathtub for people who can afford it and are planning on using it.

    4) The flooring material. Its best to use tiles which offer some resistance to avoid unfortunate accidents.

    5) The lighting. (definitely important!!)

Note: I remember reading in a few places that toothbrushes are best not stored in bathrooms as these attract micro-organisms. Anybody got any comments on it ?
